Advanced Palladium

We were tremendously saddened by the untimely death of beloved workshop instructor Bill Schwab in October of 2025. He taught a workshop here titled "Getting over Palladium" covering techniques for adding additional photographic processes to a palladium print that took the print from good to great.

We are offering a similar class for 2026 which will be taught by Clay Harmon.

This class will teach you how to make palladium prints, how to create and fine-tune the negatives used to print them, and then to add additional layers of cyanotype or pigmented gum bichromate to change the way the look. The techniques we teach enable you to turn a monochrome base print into a duotone or tri-tone print using only the original palladium negative.

What you will learn

* the basics of making palladium prints and the factors that affect their quality
* how to use QuadToneRIP and QuadToneProfiler-DN to make digital negatives that create prints that look like the image on your computer screen
* how to prepare paper for multiple layer printing
* how to use chemistry and exposure to add a cyanotype layer on top of a palladium print
* how to use cyanotype bleaching and toning to affect the final look of a combination print
* how to add gelatin sizing to a palladium print to prepare it for adding a gum layer
* how pigment color and concentration, sensitizer concentration and exposure affect how a gum layer will enhance a palladium print

This class is a speed-run through palladium and combination printing. We will take 4 days to go through all the techniques covered in the class. This class is probably not appropriate for someone with zero alternative process experience. However, if you have a basic understanding of how prints are made and have experience with a process such as cyanotype you will probably feel right at home.
