Creative Print Enclosures with Matt Magruder Aug 10-12, 2026

Regular price $900.00 $0.00

This workshop is our first foray into book arts workshops, and we are excited to be offering a class taught by the incredibly creative and talented Matt Magruder.

If you are unfamiliar with Matt's work you can get a glimpse of his approach in transforming his prints into three dimensional art at his @kahgruder Instagram feed.

Matt incorporates some aspect of his subject matter into the enclosure used to contain a set of prints. His enclosures add additional context to the subject matter and serve as a way to present a set of printed images in a unified and coherent way.

This workshop is appropriate for photographers and printmakers  interested in finding ways to present their work in a creative manner that enhances their subject. No previous bookmaking experience is required.

The class participants will be begin by learning the fundamental techniques of box construction by making a simple cloth-covered clamshell portfolio box that holds a stack of standard-sized prints - typically this will be an 8x10 or 10x12 size box. Measuring, board cutting, fabric cutting and gluing and pasting are some of the techniques that will be covered.

Once the basic process is familiar, each participant will design and construct a more involved print enclosure. The adornments and additions might be as simple as an embossed inset for a nameplate on the box cover, or as complicated as a set of sliding drawers containing individual prints. Matt will act as a guide in selecting an approach that matches both the desire and abilities of each student.

We supply all materials needed for the workshop. The participant will need to supply some basic tools - scissors, sharp cutting tool such as an Olfa knife, and a bone folder. We will be happy to provide a list of links to these items if the student does not already own them.

The class is three days long. The first day you will complete the basic clamshell box. On the second and third day you will work on an enhanced version of an enclosure.
